Most office networks grow by accident: a router from the internet provider, an extra access point here, a switch under a desk there. It works until the team grows, more devices connect and everyone starts working in the cloud. These are the signs it’s time to plan it properly.
1. Wi-Fi is fine in one room and useless in another
Dead spots usually mean too few access points, or one router trying to cover the whole building through walls. A short site survey shows where coverage drops, and well-placed access points fix it for good.
2. Everything slows down in the afternoon
If speed drops when the office is busy, the problem may be your internet plan, an old router that can’t handle many devices, or one machine using all the bandwidth for backups or updates. Each has a different fix, so it is worth measuring before buying anything.
3. Calls and video meetings keep breaking up
Voice and video are sensitive to delay and dropped packets. Wired connections for desks that host calls, and quality-of-service settings that put calls first, make a clear difference.
4. Guests use the same Wi-Fi as your accounts team
Visitors, staff phones and your business systems should not share one network. Separate networks (VLANs) for guests, staff and devices like cameras and printers keep a problem on one from reaching the others.
5. Nobody knows the router password, or who set it up
If the admin passwords are still the defaults, or only a former staff member knew them, your network is exposed. Every business should have its network passwords documented and stored safely.
6. Cables are a tangle nobody wants to touch
Unlabelled, loose cabling makes every fault slower to find and every move riskier. Structured cabling with a labelled patch panel turns a half-day hunt into a five-minute fix.
7. When the internet drops, the whole business stops
A single connection is a single point of failure. A second line, such as fibre plus Starlink or mobile data, with automatic failover keeps payments, email and cloud systems running.
